Sleep Supports Physical Health

Large systematic reviews have shown that adults who consistently sleep too little (typically less than 6–7 hours per night) are at increased risk of several chronic diseases, including:

An umbrella review of 69 meta-analyses found that inappropriate sleep duration significantly increased the risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, depression, frailty, stroke, and metabolic disorders. The review also reported that every one-hour reduction in sleep among short sleepers was associated with a 3–11% increase in the risk of several adverse health outcomes.

Several large prospective cohort studies indicate a U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and mortality. Both short and long sleep durations are associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality, while approximately 7–8 hours of sleep per night is generally associated with the most favorable health outcomes.

An overview of systematic reviews involving more than 4.4 million participants concluded that 7–8 hours of sleep per day is most consistently associated with optimal health among adults.
